Instead, has program sites and an office that is not always staffed. Setting: Community-based programs in three sites from Ship Harbour to Lake Echo (a 50 KM stretch of Eastern Shore) Established:1994 Clientele: Residents of the Eastern Shore from Ship Harbour to Lake Echo; families with children from birth to 18 Are user fees charged? Yes. In the past 3 years with good funding we did not charge user fees; we have a fair number of residents with lower incomes so we wanted to be completely accessible; over the years people have made spontaneous donations. Now we ask for donations at our busiest program, $2 per week, “pay when you can”, or $60/year Any eligibility requirements? No Major Funder: Department of Community Services, HRDC funding, United Way of Halifax Region Other Funders: Community Health board, donations, grants Annual Operating Budget (range): $100,000-$149,000 Best Practices: The New Parents’ Group receives so many wonderful accolades, partly because of the staff person who coordinates and facilitates; but this program is just plain very important for new mothers and fathers, especially mothers. They get information through formal and informal sources, they connect and make new friends, they have support at a very critical time of life for both parent and baby. Future Program Development:
