Hours of Operation: Monday-Friday 9:00-3:00 pm (school hours)

Setting:
Centre is in an elementary school (Musquodoboit Valley Education Centre). Have programs in other areas as they cover the whole Musquodoboit Valley (from Dutch Settlement to Dean). Use sites in Dean and Upper Musquodoboit as well as Dutch Settlement. Open whenever the program is on. Often have programs outside school hours.

Clientele:
Families with preschool age children. 0-6 At times, have had some school-age programs (dependent on funding)…generally receive under 6 funding. Also do community events which are geared toward all ages. Programs are funding dependent

Are user fees charged?
Yes. Nominal fee ($90/year for Junior Preschool and $180/Year for Senior Preschool) for the preschool only.

Any eligibility requirements?
No.  Some programs are age-specific (e.g. Senior Preschool is for children entering school the next year)

Other Funders: Community Health board, Family Learning Endowment Initiative Fund, IWK Health Centre Foundation, Musquodoboit Valley Education Centre

Annual Operating Budget (range): Not provided

Best Practices: Preschool. There was nothing in the community. Now, approx. 95% of the children who attend primary have been through the program.

Future Program Development: Family Tutoring Program. Have a teacher/tutor spend time with the children who need remedial assistance as well as with parents to teach parents how to help with homework, study habits. Would like to develop the program further.

Additional Information:
  • Centre is in an elementary school (Musquodoboit Valley Education Centre). Have programs in other areas as they cover the whole Musquodoboit Valley (from Dutch Settlement to Dean). Use sites in Dean and Upper Musquodoboit as well as Dutch Settlement.
  • Musquodoboit Valley FRC covers a huge rural area. Currently, they bring programs to different communities in their area because transportation is a big issue.
  • Staff have completed training in "Learning Language and Loving It: A Hanen Centre program focused on language and literacy development in children" (offered by a Speech and Language Pathologist through the TLC4 program) and "Inclusion Training: Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale-R" (through Partnerships for Inclusion). Three staff members are licensed to offer "You Make The Difference".
