Setting:
Varies depending on the location. Along with the office sites listed above we operate approximately 20 community based sites. Our Cape Breton Regional Municipality office is a store front location in a downtown office building. Our Port Hawkesbury office is a suite of rooms in a vocational school. Our Neil’s Harbour office is a free standing building. Our Inverness office is in the Royal Bank building – lower level. Our Baddeck office is in suite of rooms in an office building. Our community sites include community halls, legions, lion’s clubs, church halls, fire halls, etc. throughout Cape Breton Island.

Established: 1993

Clientele: Family Place works to develop, adapt, administer, facilitate, and/or deliver programs and services that promote the well being of families with young children on Cape Breton Island and beyond. The age range of the children involved in most programs is birth to six years of age. Work involving parents oftentimes begins during the prenatal period and extends until their children reach six years of age. The CUPW/UPCE Special Needs Project extends the work of Family Place beyond Cape Breton Island to the rest of Canada and extends the age range to the end of the eighteenth year. Given the scarce nature of resources, Family Place places a particular focus on reaching those families that have the least access to available resources.

Are user fees charged? No user fees are charged. Supports are provided to reduce barriers of child care costs and transportation.
Any eligibility requirements? Given the scarce nature of resources, Family Place places a particular focus on reaching those families that have the least access to available resources. The CUPW/UPCE Special Needs Project work is limited to those families who have a parent as a member of one of the two identified unions.

Major Funder: Public Health Agency of Canada (CAPC), Public Health Agency of Canada (CPNP), Department of Community Services, Department of Health, corporate sponsors, public foundations, unions.

Other Funders: Family Place has the benefit of receiving broad based community supports from individuals, networks, government departments, health authorities, community agencies, across multiple sectors in multiple communities across the Island.

Annual Operating Budget (range): Greater than $1,000,000

Best Practices: We do offer programs in a rather unique setting – our local correctional facility which enables us to work with incarcerated dads in a very positive manner. Our national CUPW/UPCE Special Needs Project is captured and highlighted in its own recently published book titled Moving Mountains that is available upon request to any interested parties.

Future Program Development: Currently, we are developing our early language and learning programs, our child care information and support programs, and seeking to expand our parent education programs to include programs for parents that are developmentally delayed themselves, and programs around anger management.

Additional Information: The organization is responsible for delivering programs and services under the following project/program identities at this time:
