Amanda's Gift is a story of hope. It is about how, despite very difficult circumstances, young adults are able to realize their aspirations for post-secondary education.
Amanda Sutherland's struggle to complete post-secondary education led her to provide a gift of $500 to the Nova Scotia Council for the Family. A former youth in care herself, Amanda's gift inspired the members of the Council to create a bursary program to support other former youth in care on their educational journey. She felt more needed to be done to reach out to former youth in care who are pursuing educational goals under challenging circumstances.
Donors to the Amanda's Gift Bursary Program support the educational and career aspirations of young people who have faced tremendous adversity in their lives. In today's world, ensuring young people have the opportunity to complete their education which leads them to be able to support themselves as successful adults in our communities, provides one of the best returns on our investment available.
Amanda's Gift recipients benefit from not only the financial support, but also the inclusion in a caring community. The bursary program connects these youth with supportive adults and offers hope to young people with care experience. The named bursary communicates concern and support from community partners. Amanda's Gift allows recipients to focus on their education and helps counteract the negative effects of poverty.
We rely on the generosity and support of our members and the community at large to donate funds to keep the program growing. For more information on making a donation to Amanda's Gift, contact the Nova Scotia Council for the Family.
